What is Application Performance Monitoring (APM)?

Level27 APM is our own tool for monitoring the performance of your websites. The tool helps you identify performance issues, ensuring that each website becomes lightning-fast.

The tool is available for free to all managed hosting and agency hosting customers.

Slow websites lead to revenue loss

There is a proven relationship between the speed of your website and visitor behavior. The faster the website, the more interactions you have with visitors. Conversely, the slower the website, the fewer results you get from it. So, simply put, if your website is slow, you are losing revenue.

If your website is slow, it's crucial to take action now!

Benefits of Application Performance Monitoring (APM)

APM stands for Application Performance Monitoring. It is a system that tracks everything your website is doing, such as executing PHP code, database queries, making external API calls, and so on.

By doing this, the tool can easily identify potential issues. For example:

  • Slow database queries
  • Sluggish pages
  • Poorly written code, such as in WordPress or Magento themes
  • Slow external calls, such as an API that is unresponsive and consequently slowing down your page.
APM

How does it work?

Level27 APM is available for all managed hosting and agency hosting customers with recent PHP versions. If we activate the option, an agent will be installed to collect monitoring data and send it to the central servers. Within a few minutes, you can already see the results in our control panel. Here are the advantages of our Level27 APM:

  • You no longer need expensive services like New Relic or Datadog
  • All essential functionality is included.
  • You can view everything directly in our control panel, so no additional software or configuration is required.
APM

The basics: statistics

The first feature is statistics. When APM is enabled on a website, you have access to a multitude of statistics and graphs that provide insights into what your website is doing.

  • Abnormal behavior can be easily identified by comparing it with data from the previous week. This allows you to have an immediate reference point without the need to compare multiple screens side by side
  • The graphs can be enlarged, making it easier to share them with clients
  • You can view latency, throughput, the number of errors, and even a breakdown of the application's activities (code execution, database operations, or external calls)
Transacties

The icing on the cake: transactions

Transacties or traces are the killer feature that has contributed significantly to New Relic's success. Through transactions, APM keeps track of all the details of a specific page or request as soon as it exceeds a certain duration (e.g., 1.5 seconds).

By capturing these transactions, you can delve into the intricate details of what the page was precisely doing at that specific moment. Was it executing code, waiting for a database query, or making an external API call?

In practical terms, by tracing these transactions, you can identify over 95% of all application issues. This level of visibility allows you to pinpoint the root causes of performance problems or bottlenecks and take appropriate actions to optimize your application's performance.

APM27 as an alternative to New Relic

Just like New Relic, APM27 is a tool that helps you identify and resolve performance issues with your applications. The major difference is that New Relic is an expensive tool that needs to be purchased separately, offering a wide range of functionalities. It includes not only server monitoring but also various other tools that can sometimes be confusing. With APM27, we have focused on the essentials: server performance monitoring with a focus on traces, statistics, and queries. All of this is included in our hosting packages and integrated into the control panel!
